Both teams came out with strong defense and good pitching throughout the game. The Whalley Chiefs struck first in the second inning with a sacrafice fly by Carson Nylund to make the score 1-0. The Chiefs continued to roll in the third and fourth innings. A fourth inning solo home run to left field by catcher Nic Buse extended their lead to 3-1. The Lynx were able to swing the momentum to their side in the sixth inning with good hitting and agressive base running. The tying run was scored on a close play at the plate when Jeremi Roch singled to right to score Mike Fitzsimmons who stole second base on the previous pitch. Going into the seventh inning the game was up for grabs when a controversial play shocked the Lynx and their supporters. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh Lynx pitcher David Fitzsimmons was charged with a balk that advanced all base runners including Nick Rohla from third base giving the Whalley a 4-3 lead. Witnesses said that someone had called time just before Fitzsimmons was about to pitch. Fitzsimmons stopped in the middle of pitching motion and did not throw to the plate. Umpires had not called time, therefore the pitcher had to finish the pitch. Failure to do so resulted in the balk call. The Lynx were not able to get their offense going in the bottom of the seventh and suffered the loss. Whalley pitcher Connor Nishimura earned his first win of the tournament to bring his record to 1-0. Fitzsimmons was given the loss bring him to 0-1. The win takes the Whalley Chiefs record to a perfect 3-0 in round robin play. The Lynx now sit at 2-1. Both teams are in action again tomorrow. The Chiefs take on the Orleans Red Sox while the Lynx face the Oakville Whitecaps.
